Lucy Townsend, UK contacted Nicholas in 2012 about his cat paintings as she wanted to commission a cat portrait for her mum Judith, as a birthday surprise. Judiths cat is called Samson and he is the most beautiful cat! The photos Lucy emailed were wonderful and we knew that they would be perfect for a portrait.
Nicholas and Lucy discussed the portrait via email and decided that a 14 x 10 size would work well for Samson. They also decided that a mid tone, subtle colour was needed as a background to allow Samsons white fur to stand out in the portrait. Nicholas didnt want to go too dark behind as he didnt want it to be too overpowering for Sampson so he chose a very subtle coffee colour background which really suited Samsons light fur.
You can see from the step by steps below, Nicholas built up the light tones of the cat gradually to create the depth needed in Samson long, soft fur. Lucy opted to ahve the portrait framed with our local framer and chose the Ornate frame. This is one of our favoruite frames as its colour seems to change with the light, sometimes it shows a silver colour, sometimes a warm bronze. Its absolutely beautiful and works well with a wheat coloured inner linen slip. Both Lucy and her mum was thrilled with the outcome and a few of their emails are below.
